Step Your Fresh Up Friday

As we close out this week there are quite a few tunes that demand your attention and some upcoming news from my crew at Dance Hard Die Hard and Next Era as well.  As a new recruit to Dance Hard Die Hard I will be releasing a mix alongside SMiRK (Twitter) featuring tunes from Curtis B, Utku S., Lazy Rich, and more!  I have also put together a Sunday broadcast on uStream starting at 7pm EST for the Next Era DJs!  Look for names from the Next Era DJ crew dropping some fresh tunes to get you in the right mood for any Monday surprises you may face.  On to the tunage!

First up is a hot new breakbeat from DJ Vize out of Portland, OR.  No stranger to breakbeats and a high octane live performance Vize is going to be having some killer releases out in March and April including Refuse on Bassbong.com!  Refuse features bouncy synth riffs and a grinding synth backing track throughout as well as progressive pads and a plethora of drum syncopation.  The mellow subby breakdown complete with the delayed stabs drives you right back into the proggy drop.  His bootleg 'Bout Money' will be released as a free download if he gets 20 shares on his post too!

Utku S. is absolute monster of a producer releasing tunes on Cassette as well as a ton of loop packs on loopmasters.  His style is always at the top of the game of whatever genre he's working in at the moment.  His latest breaks release on Beatport, 'My Life' is no exception.  I have been playing his tunes out for quite some time and I feel he doesn't get near the recognition that he deserves!  The latest on his soundcloud is a monster of a tune deserved to be caned hard.  His synth work is impeccable and is matched by few.  Check him out, I guarantee you'll be pleased.

No stranger to peaktime electro house, Revolvr is back at it again with a remix of Spencer & Hill.  The huge builds lead up to supreme breakdowns which I can already see rocking big rooms across the country.  His mixes as well as his tunes are great to have in your repertoire.  His mix from February is off the hook and highly recommended, have a look and a download below (it's free on iTunes through the Buy link).

Step Your Fresh Up Friday - Breaks that Bang

If you know breakbeat, you know this man. Deekline is a veteran producer of many styles but I can say that some of my favorite releases from him have been in the breaks department. This continues from his earlier tracks on Botchit and Scarper to his latest projects on Rat Records, Sludge, and beyond. The forthcoming release "Always RIP" on Rat Records is nothing short of his energy he always brings.  The original mix with it's progressive intro brings it up just right to the piercing vocals.  The drop hits hard with slimey detuned squares with a righteously funky groove.  The Pyramid remix has a classic breakbeat feel that will get you in the gut.  The Eddie K and Minus remix brings the DnB just how I like it, smooth enough to flow and dirty enough to get down to.  The release as a whole is absolutely out of this world.

Always RIP - forthcoming on Rat Records by DJ Deekline

Deenk continues his steady flow of breaks releases that hit the spot.  His tracks are always carrying a great energy with a funky driving beat that's nonstop to the last drop.  His synths are super clean and his arrangement is dancefloor ready, just what you need for the weekend.  Kyla's vocals carry your feet on a journey of their own.  From glitch to funk to drivers, he does them all in proper fashion.

You were gettin juiced before, now they're back at it again with their latest release Back To Back.  A Tribe called Wes and DJ Fixx bring it with a breakbeat styling.  The orignal mix takes me back to florida for sure!  Fixx takes you away with the electro stylings with a hard hitting funk like he's known to do.  Check both the tunes!

Ian Padley aka KWeRK is always bustin out some funky breaks, and this week is no exception.  With a Calvin Harris remix and a sick WIP, I'm stuck on his page!  Don't forget the Calvin Harris tune has the free download so you can bang it out at the club.  Face The Front is a chunky tune with extra catchy drums and a breakdown that's ever so sweet.  Check his other tunes and look for his releases on Kick It Recordings and beyond!

Step Your Fresh Up Fridays - Soul with a Broken Beat

A.Skillz the master of the wheels of steel finally released his nu funk remix of California Soul.  I first heard this on his Annie Nightengale mixThe vocals of the motown days really cut through me every time.  The bouncy lead hits a natural groove that pairs perfectly with the soulful vibes of Marlena Shaw and the original tune.  I first heard this in his Beats Working Vol 1 mix and I've been waiting for it ever since.  A true master of flexin' the funk, A.Skillz is heading across the globe with his signature sound.

California soul (A.Skillz Remix) by A.Skillz

Kwerk from London, UK is killin' it here with his newest breaks work in progress Rock It Like This. Not only a funky stuttered arrangement of b-boy samples but a meat grinder of a bassline synth keeping your feet right on track.  I really enjoy the first breakdown as well, not just a standard windup, but rather a little old school ravey bit to the drop.  Keep a lookout for big things from Kwerk and the UK breaks scene, it's the raw business. Just a little added taste of Kwerk is his remix of Paloma Faith - New York. Really dig the vibes he's putting down and I think you will too.

Don't bother tellin' them that drum machine ain't got no soul...On the indie tip DJ Icey is rockin' it steady with the funk as usual.  His latest is a remix of The Limousines is a true danceable indie killer that hits the spot just right.  Summer vibes is definitely what this one is about...well, that and drum machines and disco balls.  Have a listen, cop the download, and bang out this weekend.

Paul Van Dyk, not exactly...

Big things are coming on the regular from Michigan native William Van Dyke.  His breaks style can range from old school to new, wobbles to heavy booty bass, he's got it all.  Having been putting out re-rubs for the last year he's polished his production skills and ready to melt faces with his sounds.  Not only a DJ, but major player in the midwest breaks culture, William throws events under his production company Dirty Beatz promotion.  If you were in Michigan last summer you probably heard the hype about "Dude Where's My Tent 2"which brought big names from all around including DJ Dan, 12th Planet, and Reid Speed.  His newest track hits e-tailers this Friday on Drop The World.  A brilliant build into some b-boy samples then on with the boom clap boom boom clap...it's got a classic breaks vibe as well as a newschool flavor...to the tune!

Hear It Blow _ William VanDyke Original Mix ***Available 6/17/11*** by williamvandyke

Next up is a remix of one of those aforementioned heavyweights, DJ Dan.  D*Funk brings it again with a remix of DJ Dan's "Chop Shop".  D*Funk is a breakbeat wonder from down under that brings out the groovy downtempo breaks along the lines of A.Skillz up to the dirtiest of electro breaks.  His label Upstart Music has some solid party tracks to get the floor going and even some bouncy cheeky ish to get silly to.  After all is said and done, D*Funk doesn't fake the funk, he just provides it.  Check his soundcloud for a SICK free track 'Ripgroove'.  I would give you the direct player here, but you have to check out the rest ;)

THIS JUST IN FROM OUR FRIENDS ACROSS THE POND!  Life Support Machine has featured the Chop Shop boot as a FREE DOWNLOAD!!!  Get over there and check it out!  Keep in touch with Life Support Machine for hot new tracks and exclusive downloads.

Step Your Fresh Up Fridays: The Aftermath

After one of the most exhausting weekends of partying, networking, and all around madness (ahh DEMF...), it's time for some serious tunes to bring us back to it.  As we approach the onset of summer, SMiRK from Dance Hard Die Hard provides us with a mix of tunes that go boom.  Ranging from aggressive DnB to breaks with that summer vibe, electro house and dubstep, he makes it clear that it's time to get down.  Broken beat masterminds and 4/4 fiends litter the tracklist and come together to make this mix proper beyond proper.  I was so excited when I saw the tracklist because I have a lot of them in store for you all myself...now on to the show!  The mix is available for download here or just click link to begin playing.  Enjoy and props to SMiRK for always going outside the box when mixing...run it selecta!

Step Your Fresh Up Fridays - DEMF Weekend!

With DEMF this weekend I know people are about to get all kinds of crazy so here are some tunes that I think will help you get with it.  Some groovy, some bangers, and even some for that late night hotel chill session to wind down.

Some of my favorite emcees to ever hit the stage make a guest appearance in D*Funk's bootleg of Linguistics by Jurassic 5.  The groove of this tune stays true to how J5 would have it, but with a bit of a twist.  A UK hip hop bounce track always makes me feel good, and this does just that.  D*Funk is definitely not a stranger to the more techy true breakbeats as well.  He has quite a few releases on Upstart Music that are bangers for sure.

'Loaded' > D-Funk & Some DJ [Grits N Gravy] by D*Funk

Booty poppin' breaks delivered fresh out the oven from Sharaz!  I'm a huge fan of booty bass of any genre and here's a big DJ Funk remix ready to shake asses.  Check out his site for info and all things upcoming at http://www.dropthatbass.com/

Sharaz "Sugarfish" (Original Mix) by DJ Sharaz

A man who needs no intros in the breakbeat world, DJ Fixx  along with Keith McKenzie just dropped three new remixes of DJ Icon, Paul Anthony & ZXX, and Southpaw!  Dutchy, dirty, and groovin' breaks with the signature KMFX treatment is what it's all about, get ill.

Ground Control/DJ Icon - Wha? (KMFX Mix) by dj_fixx

Paul Anthony/CZR/ZXX - Rocking To The AM (KMFX Mix) by dj_fixx

Paul Anthony/ZXX/Southpaw - Batter Blaster (KMFX Mix) by dj_fixx

Wind down your night just right with an original from Louisville's house legend.  Glenn Giles does it just right, whether GFG, Unkle Funk, or the numerous other moniker's he brings it proper.  Deep, sexy, funky, whatever flavors of house music you dig, here you go!  Make sure to check the mix mentioned in a previous post from the Wisemen Promotion's launch party for a longer groove accompanied by Firecat 451 on the mic for your aural pleasure.

You May Just Need a Diaper...

No matter what your genre of choice, as long as you enjoy bass, you'll be loving the upcoming release from Left/Right, Digital Pizza, and Access Denied.  The Left/Right and Digital Pizza release is coming up from the traditional breaks end and Access Denied comes in with the driving distortion he's known for.  Check out both mixes, I know I've been waiting for the upcoming 2011 Left/Right releases, and now you will be too!

DBP041 - Left/Right, Digital Pizza – Every Body W/ Access Denied Remix by Downbeat

Specimen A drops it again with a Chasing Shadows remix that really hits home for me.  It's a breaky remix that still keeps a down low grimey element.  I really like the fact that it's a mixture of killer upper basslines, broken drumbeats, and quirky synths!

Specimen A - Chasing Shadows feat. David Ivan (Breakstep Mix) OUT NOW by SpecimenA

I was really surprised to see a message in my inbox about this one, but I certainly would have been giving it a once over either way.  Defunct!, Loc E!, AGAG, and Figure rock the spot with a mildly disco influenced tune to definitely get you bouncin'.  The tempo drop really takes it down low and I can already tell the dance floor response with this one, it'll be a wild one.  Check it!

Defunct!Feat LOc E & AGAG - We Are The Party (Figure Remix) by LOc E!

With many quality tracks on the label over the past few years the Kick It! crew does it again with their newest release featuring Trevor Rockwell.  Each preview hits a bit of a different vibe which is what I like to see in an upcoming EP.  From ravey synths to stuttered vocals and a wobbly bassline this is a "cop it all" type of release!

Painkillers, Drop Tops, and Ragga Twins

Here's an old track with a new spin on it from Noisia, a remix of the classic breaks/drum and bass tune Painkiller.  Keeping with the overall aggressive vibe to the song, Noisia puts their seal of approval straight up front on this one.  The classic Noisia tone of aggressive grinding synths twists this classic up a whole new direction and in every way keeps up with the original intentions of The Freestylers and Pendulum.

Freestylers & Pendulum - Painkiller (Noisia Remix) by NOISIA

Run DMT comes to the table with the hard hitter "Drop Top" due to be released on Play Me 2 with a hard hitting energetic intro.  From the drop it hits the right spot with proper vocals to the tribal transformation in the end.  This is definitely going to make it into my next set.

RUN DMT - Drop Top - FORTHCOMING PLAY ME 2 RECORDS by RUN DMT'S MAGICAL JUKEBOX

Dave from Aquasky really is a wanker...more like an absolute monster of a producer.  Being in the game for over 10 years, Aquasky as a project has done pioneering on many frontiers, and just dropped this one for us with a free DL.  Alongside the Ragga Twins, Aquasky takes it back with some oldschool flavor to pop and shake to.  The Ragga Twins vocals get the floor churning without fail.  The middle eight is definitely the clutch for me, great phrasing keeps it quite interesting.  Finally the last breakdown with the epic keys and build, can't say enough about it!  Check it and leave some love on his page.

Step Your Fresh Up Fridays - Whoa Nelly...

Kid Digital and BETA have some serious bassline breaks action in "Bangin Machine" that drives the dancefloor like Jeremy Clarkson in the Ariel Atom (see pic above).  Although the choice of sounds are mechanical as indicated by the name, they're sounds sure to make your body rock.  The grinding mid-bass synth and killer percussion sound choice make this a sureshot for any breaker.  The techy nature of it does just the same, keep on the look for this release from Bombtraxx!

Kid Digital - Bangin Machine (BETA Remix) [BOMBTRAXX] by Kid-Digital

Let me just say, that yes, there are a million remixes of this track, and yes, a lot of them sound the same.  Now that that's been put out...yeah, finally got a breaks remix that should be available for DL today from Sharaz!  Some true breakbeat sickness coming out for sure.  From wonky synths to La Roux vox, this one is where it's at with proper arrangement that doesn't take away from the vocals.  The focus is in just the right spot, peep the clip, cop the DL when it's up!

FREE ON APRIL 15TH **CLIP** La Roux "In For The Kill" (Sharaz's Sleep When You're Dead VIP Remix) by DJ Sharaz

Finally, a bangin' mix from my friends out on the left coast.  Bringin' the rough sounds from the Portland (PDX) rave scene is Discobisquits & Gravy, a collaborative effort of Echoik and Uberlush.  These two are no strangers of the electronic scene and hit it hard every gig with not only proper sounds, but a stage presence to match.  This is a new mix of theirs available for mobile steady rockin'.  From Dutchy, to Indie, to straight down and dirty, they cover all your basses ;)  Peep the mix!

A Little Bit of This a Little Bit of That

Aquasky has a massive new breaks track with some old school breakdowns along with soulful vox from the one and only Diane Charlemagne.  At the drop comes the distorted lead driving into some serious dancefloor business.  The track has a great overall flow and incorporates a ton of styles from nu skool breaks, old school epic breakdowns, and soulful vocals.  It's definitely got something for everyone.

* Promo * Aquasky + Diane Charlemagne 'Take Me There' Passenger by Aquaskyuk

With a new take on the nu skool sound, Access Denied brings a downtempo breaks track to rock the f*ck out to.  With a slow grinding groove, I think it would make for a great opener in a progressively uptempo breaks set.  Start down low and wind it up yo!

True Party Rockers A.Skillz & Specimen A

A.Skillz just released his series of vinyl bootlegs in mp3 format available for download here.  Not only that but he also released a mix that in under 30 minutes, encompasses practically the entire series (vol 1-10) of bootlegs!  Not only are his bootlegs some of the freshest out there, but his skills on the decks are to match.

Insane Bangers Vol 1-10 Mix by A.Skillz

Next up is Specimen A with a proper bootleg of "Wicked" Wilson Pickett's - In the Midnight Hour.  The original is a classic R&B track released on Atlantic Records in 1965 recorded in Nashville at Stax Records where Pickett made his big break.  As a kid I listened to oldies music on the local radio station with my dad and remember almost every word to a certain few classics, this being one of them.  This remix may have a nostalgic effect on me, but I can guarantee it will rock the dancefloor the same.

What do Russia and Australia have in common?

I've been posting some Russian breaks for some time now, most with a pretty in your face aggressive tone.  This remix of Specimen A by Kid Digital is no exception, although with a touch of funk.  Kid Digital is never short of impressive on all his releases, including the freebie remix of Whoomp There It Is!  Grab it while you can and do it to it.

Specimen A - Fly On The Wall (Kid Digital Remix) by Kid-Digital

Kid Digital - Disco (Club Mix) + Whoomp! acapella [FREE DOWNLOAD] by Kid-Digital

Not only a great producer of smashing bootlegs, Philly Blunt takes it on the original tip on Ground level with the brain-tickling techy breaks track "Never Get Enough".  When I said brain tickling, I mean the fuzzy lead synth that just gets inside your head so easily!  Check the track, cop the track, bang the track at the club, bang the track in your bedroom, bang to the track, whatever your fancy, just do it!

Bring the Boom Back with a Bassline

Some of the biggest names in the scene right now come together on this massive fusion of breaks and dubstep.  You can hear a piece of each artist in the track and really get a great vibe from it from beginning to end.  I know it's just a tease with it still being a work in progress but you'll be guaranteed a killer final cut!  The Zombies are coming, make sure you grab your boomstick...

Elite Force, Excision, Skism, Reso - Boomstick Onslaught [TASTER] by Elite Force

So this one definitely takes me back...copped it on vinyl shortly after its release from Juno.  Breaks based on basslines were the thing to do and I couldn't have agreed more.  Aquasky always brings it pretty hard but this time he's building the pressure.  Vox are done by an unknown vocalist which the Breakfastaz never revealed to Aquasky.  If you have a clue on who it may be drop it on his soundcloud!

'The Pressure (Aquasky Mix) - The Breakfastaz - Passenger 2006 by Aquaskyuk

Here's the latest from Krafty Kuts making instant vibes with a mainstay mc from the ill crew, Sporty O.  The old school disco feel in the intro drop down into the dirty lightweight wobbly bassline you're used to hearing from Krafty.  The hook from Sporty is catchy as usual accompanied by a funky breakdown make the feelin' just right.  The dubby breakdown towards the end gets that dow low energy and brings it straight away back to the breaky goodness for the outtro.

Down South Breaks Hit Low

Breakbeat legend DJ Icey drops a miami bass remix of Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll and it's definitely not lacking in any respect...you're gonna need a sub to hear this one proper.  It's definitely got the Icey feel to it, polished, great arrangement, and most importantly danceable as all hell.  He even hit us with the free download, get it while you still can!

Heads Will Roll (DJ Icey Bass Mix) by DJ Icey

Next up is 8*B1T out of Austin, TX with a HOT remix of Blazerframe that's got some legit old school breakbeat flavor in the vox.  Funky enough to make you bust out the cardboard and break on the spot.  Get your boombox and your shelltoes and get down!

Spain Loves Breaks!

Spain is blowing up the breaks scene hard these days with breaks festivals like Ultra Tear Nation.  From deeper progressive vibes to booty bouncin' madness they have an army of breakers and it's only getting bigger.  Breakbeat headliners come together from across the globe including Curtis B of illeven eleven out of Chicago!  Here's a few tracks from some Spanish breaks artists that I've grown particularly fond of.  From remixes to originals they know how to put it down proper.

The Baymont Bross will be making their first US appearance in St. Louis at Electro Rodeo.  Their sound is a combo of booty and electro breaks and I can't get enough.  Danceable breakbeats is what I expect and they deliver it on a silver platter every time.

Baymont Bross Feat RayNPro - Twisted Metal (Original Mix) by The Pooty Club Records

Beat Assassins - Straight To The World (Baymont Bross Remix) by The Pooty Club Records

I've been playing tracks from David Casal aka Deibeat for quite some time now, from the originals he dropped on iBreaks to some new tunes rockin' on The Pooty Club Records.  Always with a down low driving groove his breaks range from progressive and dark to techy/electro.  Have a listen to one of his latest:

Breaking 1,000 Hits and Broken Beats

Thanks everyone for helping me break 1,000 hits on the blog, glad to see you're diggin' the content!  I have some plans in store for the rest of the year and beyond so keep checkin back for new industry info, tunes, and maybe even some swag.  Now onto what's up and up in the world of electronic dance music!

I was talking with Curtis B of Illeven Eleven Recordings yesterday and was tipped off to some new track previews on his soundcloud.  He's got new collab work up with some dope artists soon to hit beatport and other digital music distribution avenues.  Also lined up in the near future for him are some international acts in both Spain and Canada!  My personal fave out of the three is "Headrush" with the 8-bit synth intro to the side-chained lead synth.  Pretty good way to start off the new year the ill way!

March by Curtis B

LuQas from the UK just dropped his Spring promo mix.  If you're into psychedelic breaks then this is the mix for you.  Combining both elements of techno and breaks this mix will give your head a spin in the right direction.  Up for free download too so you have some beats on the go.

Farace and LOT49 Goodness

My man Paul Farace of Kick It Recordings dropped a new summer breaks mix today and now it's off to you!   At a runtime of about 40 minutes, it's enough to satisfy even the most hungry of breakbeat fiends.  Get the download while it's still available and get hip to Farace if you're not already.  With steady releases on his label, shows on NSB radio, and upcoming WMC gigs, he's definitely not to be missed.  Check out Farace and the rest of the Kick It crew alongside Ed Solo, Baby Anne, and more at the Truskool Breaks WMC event Wed. Tech Funk and Electro Breaks you say?

So today I found a bit of a different vibe in the in the air of the breaks world.  It's all about droning synths, whitenoise, and driving basslines.  Here's a definite winner in the field of Tech Funk from Hedflux being released on the LOT49 "7 Year Itch" compilation March 21st.  With a splash surrounded by reverb and whitenoise the track begins at the first drop with a grinding distorted synth and builds from there to a pleasantly full sounding package filled with new elements from far and wide.  Meets all my requirements for Tech Funk goodness, how about yours?

Meat Katie & Dylan Rhymes - Rollplayer (Hedflux remix) by Hedflux

Another hot remix from Deenk of Amatol - Cherry Lips.  Deenk is a relatively new breakbeat producer from Spain, but he is hitting the scene with top notch original productions and remixes on various labels including his own Hard & Hits.  His latest remix is scheduled for release on Raveart Recordings and is definitely not one to be missed.  The track has a steady driving feel to it as would be expected from electro breaks, but retains a very techy element as well as great breakdowns and builds.  Enough descriptions though, check it for yourself.

THE AMATOL-Cherry LIps(Deenk Remix) by Deenk
